The Modern COINTELPRO and How To Fight It

The Modern COINTELPRO and How To Fight It Despite the seeming popularity of environmental and social justice work in the modern world, we’re not winning. We’re losing. In fact, we’re losing really badly. Why is that? One reason is because few popular strategies pose real threats to power. That’s not an accident: the rules of social change have been clearly defined by those in power. Either you play by the rules — rules which don’t allow you to win — or you break free of the rules, and face the consequences. ...

Surprise! Inequality began with civilization.

From Science Magazine, one of the most prestigious academic journals in the world: Seek the richest family in a traditional camp of the Ju/‘hoansi/!Kung people of the Kalahari Desert in Africa, and you will almost surely fail. There is no such thing. These hunter-gatherers traditionally moved periodically and had few possessions. What they had, they shared—food, weapons, property, even territory. The poorest looking hut in a camp likely belonged to the leader, explains anthropologist Richard Lee, a professor emeritus at the University of Toronto in Canada, because leaders try to avoid looking superior. ...

Free Black Panther Sekou Cinque T. M. Kambui!

Sekou Cinque T. M. Kambui (S/N William J. Turk) has requested a letter-writing campaign asserting his innocence in preparation for his upcoming parole hearing, which is scheduled for June 18, 2014. Sekou maintains that he has committed no crime, and yet has been under the heel of the State since 1975, when he was accused of murdering a wealthy white oil-man and a KKK member in Alabama. He was pulled over in January of 1975 and accused of and arrested for the December ’74 murder after a 9mm pistol was found in his car. Multiple witnesses in his first trial later reported that they had been coerced into testifying against Sekou, after which every defense witness was driven out of the state by police intimidation. No proven murder weapon has been found, and neither Sekou nor the pistol found in his car has ever been linked to the crime scene. ...

Dead Babies and Utah's Carbon Bomb

A sudden and extreme spike in neonatal mortality in Utah’s rural Uinta Basin is most probably related to the toxic air pollution related to the fossil fuel drilling/fracking frenzy in Eastern Utah. And the local poobahs want to kill the messenger. Donna Young is a midwife in Vernal, Utah, with 20 years experience managing home births in Idaho and Utah. She lives in the Uinta Basin, the heart of the fossil fuel drilling/fracking frenzy in Eastern Utah. On May 8, 2013, she had her first stillbirth. At the funeral service a few days later, she noted what seemed like an extraordinary number of infant graves with recent dates at the cemetery. She decided to investigate. ...

Is shit about to get real at BC's pipeline blockade? Maybe. Here's how we'll know.

From Zoe Blunt: Disclaimer: I don’t speak for Unis’tot’en Camp. This analysis comes from first-hand reports, anonymous tips, and public sources. The situation could change at any time. Updates are posted at the Caravan page, http://facebook.com/nopipelines, and the Unis’tot’en Camp page, http://facebook.com/unistoten. Unis’tot’en Camp, the indigenous pipeline blockade on Wet’suwet’en territory in Northern BC, is in its fifth year. The camp is located on so-called “Crown land” that the government of BC claims to own. (The Wet’suwet’en people have a pre-existing claim, of course.) The log cabin, bunkhouse, and permaculture garden are in the middle of the right-of-way for three pipelines bound for Kitimat: Enbridge Northern Gateway, Coastal Gas, and Pacific Trail. The road into Unis’tot’en Clan territory is closed to pipeline crews. ...

Deep Green Resistance Book Excerpt

“A black tern weighs barely two ounces. On bodily reserves less than a bag of M&Ms and wings that stretch to cover twelve inches, she’ll fly thousands of miles, searching for the wetlands that will harbor her young. And every year the journey gets longer as the wetlands are desiccated for human demands.” Read the full excerpt from Chapter 1 of the book Deep Green Resistance: Strategy to Save the Planet. ...
