Freddie Gray Protest

Baltimore and Black Lives Matter

This article by our friend Dominique Christina speaks powerfully to the issues of racism and police violence against black people and other people of color in the United States. – It is difficult to be radical in Denver. We are so privileged here. There’s a Starbucks and a Whole Foods on every corner; and dog parks and community gardens and it’s all so…seductive. It has an almost soporific effect. One can be lulled right to sleep by the idyllic snow-capped mountains and trendy cafes that suggest there is no crisis here. Our hoods aren’t like hoods in Chicago, Detroit, Jersey, parts of New York, New Orleans, St. Louis…Baltimore. No gritty crime drama about the drug trade and the alarmingly high homicide rates in the inner city could ever be filmed here. We are a little too deft with our trash pickups and our gentrification. Let me start near the beginning. ...

Learning to Resist: Fighting Development in Castle Rock to Protect Life, Land and Prairie Habitat

by Deanna Meyer (Deep Green Resistance, Colorado Chapter) Last spring as the grasses started greening up and springing across the landscape, I joyfully drove through one of the most magnificent prairie dog colonies left along Colorado’s Front Range. Almost two hundred acres were packed full of the cozy little families all basking in the sun, rolling on the burrows, kissing and playing. The happiness that coursed through me knowing that these beautiful creatures were alive, fat and happy ended abruptly with a knotted stomach when I knew they wouldn’t be here much longer. Every colony of prairie dogs, existing today in the small pockets of remaining prairies, is in danger. Every. Single. One. And why? Because of growth. Metastatic growth of our towns and profit lines. Because of the ranchers’ ability to dominate the land with livestock grazing. Because of the deep underlying ignorance of a population that has been fed so many myths that they have forgotten the truth hidden in reality while a false world of predation continually destroys the living systems that matter most to the continued cycle of life. ...

Mapping the Supply Chain of Empire

Empire Logistics is an anti-capitalist project that aims to map the chokepoints of the industrial supply chain, primarily in the United States. Here at Deep Green Resistance, we promote a strategy for resistance that focuses on underground groups using clandestine sabotage to dismantle the industrial infrastructure that undergirds and supports the global economy. We also promote strategic aboveground (non-sabotage) methods of achieving social change. In either case, tools such as Empire Logistics are worth studying. These resources can be found freely on the world wide web. ...

Followup: Tubape (Pine Nut Trees) in the Great Basin

As we previously reported, members of the Paiute Nation were incensed by the Forest Service’s clearcutting of Tubape (pine nut trees, or Pinyon Pine) outside Sweetwater, Nevada in recent times. The Forest Service clearcut over 70 acres of trees in an area that is of special significance — without consulting tribes. The grove that was cut was a traditional harvesting location for many generations. Some Paiute locals have even written of ancestors remains being placed in this location, making it a burial ground. ...

Mauna Kea - Defending a Sacred Mountain

For many years now, indigenous Hawaiian people have been involved in a battle to stop the construction of a new 30-meter telescope (TMT) array on Mauna Kea mountain, which is a sacred place and the source of all drinking water on the island. The project would be the size of a sports stadium - bigger than all the other telescopes on the mountain combined. But now the construction is going ahead. The bulldozers have been moving over the past two weeks. ...

Jineology: Kurdish Feminism

This article out of Kurdish territory in the northern regions of Iraq struck our interest. We think you’ll enjoy it as well. Feminism is by no means a western creation, or a worldview that is only applicable in certain contexts. This branch is fascinating to us, and is engaging in direct conflicts with some of the most overtly violent patriarchal institutions in the world, such as ISIS. Without further ado, here is the article by Gönül Kaya, a journalist and representative of the Kurdish women’s movement. This article is the transcript of her speech at the Jineology Conference in March 2014 in Cologne, Germany. ...

Open Letter to Reclaim Environmentalism

Once, the environmental movement was about protecting the natural world from the insatiable demands of this extractive culture. Some of the movement still is: around the world grassroots activists and their organizations are fighting desperately to save this or that creature they love, this or that plant or fungi, this or that wild place. Contrast this to what some activists are calling the conservation-industrial complex–big green organizations, huge “environmental” foundations, neo-environmentalists, some academics–which has co-opted too much of the movement into “sustainability,” with that word being devalued to mean “keeping this culture going as long as possible.” Instead of fighting to protect our one and only home, they are trying to “sustain” the very culture that is killing the planet. And they are often quite explicit about their priorities. ...
