Almost two hundred acres were packed full of the cozy little families all basking in the sun, rolling on the burrows, kissing and playing. The happiness that coursed through me knowing that these beautiful creatures were alive, fat and happy ended abruptly with a knotted stomach when I knew they wouldn’t be here much longer. Every colony of prairie dogs, existing today in the small pockets of remaining prairies, is in danger. Every. Single. One. And why? Because of growth. Metastatic growth of our towns and profit lines. Because of the ranchers’ ability to dominate the land with livestock grazing. Because of the deep underlying ignorance of a population that has been fed so many myths that they have forgotten the truth hidden in reality while a false world of predation continually destroys the living systems that matter most to the continued cycle of life. ...

ELY, Nev. (AP) - The U.S. Bureau of Land Management is seeking public comment on issues concerning public land being eyed for potential oil and gas leasing in eastern Nevada. The agency’s Ely District is analyzing 94 parcels of public land covering 140,389 acres to identify potential impacts in an environmental assessment. The deadline for submitting written comments to the BLM’s Caliente field office is May 22. The BLM Caliente Field Station is located at 1400 S. Front Street, Caliente, Nev. As we previously reported, members of the Paiute Nation were incensed by the Forest Service’s clearcutting of Tubape (pine nut trees, or Pinyon Pine) outside Sweetwater, Nevada in recent times. The Forest Service clearcut over 70 acres of trees in an area that is of special significance — without consulting tribes. The grove that was cut was a traditional harvesting location for many generations. Some Paiute locals have even written of ancestors remains being placed in this location, making it a burial ground. ...

Once, the environmental movement was about protecting the natural world from the insatiable demands of this extractive culture. Some of the movement still is: around the world grassroots activists and their organizations are fighting desperately to save this or that creature they love, this or that plant or fungi, this or that wild place. Contrast this to what some activists are calling the conservation-industrial complex–­big green organizations, huge “environmental” foundations, neo-environmentalists, some academics–­which has co-opted too much of the movement into “sustainability,” with that word being devalued to mean “keeping this culture going as long as possible.” Instead of fighting to protect our one and only home, they are trying to “sustain” the very culture that is killing the planet.
