Fracking and Oil Wells in the Uintah Basin, Utah

Air Quality in the Uintah Basin of Utah is 8x Worse Than Los Angeles

Editor’s note: this op-ed from the activists at Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment covers the issue of air quality in the Uintah Basin of northeastern Utah, where a boom in fracking and oil drilling has led to more than 10,000 wells being drilled in the last decade or so. We’ve covered these issues in the past. We invite all who are concerned about this issue to join the opposition, which needs to begin with grassroots opposition work. Other strategies could also be considered. ...

80,000 Acres of Land in Southern Nevada up for Fracking

Editors note: this post comes from the folks at Save Nevada’s Water: Ban Fracking In Nevada. After all, these are supposed to be federal lands and federal agencies - we’re supposed to be in charge, not the corporations. For those of you that haven’t heard already, the Nevada BLM has put out an environmental assessment on 80,00 acres of land they are opening up for oil and gas lease sale only a few moments away from Mesquite, and the Virgin River that drains into Lake Mead. ...

Unist’ot’en Camp, January 2015 Night sky over the Wedzin Kwah, unist’ot’en camp, in love with the land The storm enveloped us. Snow lashed the road. The darkness was total, our headlights casting weak yellow beams into the darkness. Most people had hunkered down in homes and motels, and the roads were near empty. Dead Babies and Utah's Carbon Bomb

A sudden and extreme spike in neonatal mortality in Utah’s rural Uinta Basin is most probably related to the toxic air pollution related to the fossil fuel drilling/fracking frenzy in Eastern Utah. And the local poobahs want to kill the messenger. Donna Young is a midwife in Vernal, Utah, with 20 years experience managing home births in Idaho and Utah. She lives in the Uinta Basin, the heart of the fossil fuel drilling/fracking frenzy in Eastern Utah. On May 8, 2013, she had her first stillbirth. At the funeral service a few days later, she noted what seemed like an extraordinary number of infant graves with recent dates at the cemetery. She decided to investigate. ...

DGR Chicago - Political Hypnosis in the State of the State Address

DGR Chicago responds to Governor Quinn’s January 29, 2014 State of the State Address: Contrary to the words of Governor Quinn during his recent address, Illinois is in a state of disaster. Quinn mentions extreme weather – but not climate change. Illinois residents have experienced the coldest winter in more than 30 years. This is the result of unusually high Pacific Ocean temperatures caused by global climate change. It was this shift in ocean temperatures that disrupted the “polar vortex” and plunged the country into an arctic winter. ...
