The Girls and The Grasses

Donate here: https://givebutter.com/girlsandgrasses Global warming. Biodiversity collapse. Rampant inequality, war, and sexual abuse. The problems we face today are overwhelming and getting worse. Eco-feminism has answers. From the philosophy of domination to the practicalities of overpopulation, there are links between the oppression of women and the destruction of the planet. Those links can be used to harm, as we see today. But they can also be used to heal. Women from Rachel Carson to Vandana Shiva have recognized this. On November 20th, we hosted this exporation of eco-feminism with a special 3-hour live streaming event, The Girls and the Grasses. We discussed ecofeminism, why it is important, and how it will save the planet. We also discussed the role women play in the environmental movement and heard from women on the front lines of resistance to ecocide. The mainstream environmental movement is funded mainly by foundations which often do not support foundational or revolutionary change. Radical organizations like Deep Green Resistance therefore rely on individual donors to support our activism around the world, which is why The Girls and the Grasses is also a fundraiser. We’re trying to raise funds to support global community organizing, fund our mutual aid and direct action campaigns, and sustain our core outreach and organizational work. Feminism is an environmental issue, and environmental destruction is a feminist issue. So whether or not you are in a financial position to donate, we hope you will enjoy this special event! -- The name for this event comes from an essay with the same title by Lierre Keith. –

Activists Occupy Site of Proposed Mine That Would Provide 25% of World’s Lithium Supply

Lithium is the miracle element powering your smartphone and under the hood of every electric car. But will batteries save the planet or cause more harm? The controversy is heating up in Nevada. RENO, Nevada — Activists aiming to stop an open-pit lithium mine launched a permanent protest encampment last Friday. They invite supporters to join them. Despite winter conditions at Thacker Pass, the site of the proposed $1.3 billion Lithium Americas mine, protestors have erected tents, a wood stove, and protest signs. Lawyer Will Falk, who is on site, says they mean to stay for as long as it takes to protect this old-growth sagebrush mountainside. ...

Run for Sacred Water

by Max Wilbert / Deep Green Resistance Last week, I was invited to join a Sacred Water Run-Walk in Nevada by Chief Johnnie Bobb of the Western Shoshone National Council. Chief Bobb attended the Sacred Water, Sacred Forests gathering back in May, and we exchanged contact information. I decided to attend last minute after his phone call, and gathered my supplies and energies. It is a 14 hour drive from my home in Oregon to the area the walk was to take place, so I took two days to make the drive. I stopped along the way and purchased as much food and supplies as I could afford, although I didn’t know exactly what was needed. ...

Corporate Agent PicRights Sends “Cease-and-Desist” Letter to Creators of Nissan Leaf Electric Car Greenwashing ExposĂ©

In March 2014, a volunteer for Deep Green Resistance created a photo collage titled “Greenwashing & False Solutions.” The image showed an array of solar panels, a landscape dotted with wind turbines, and a Nissan Leaf electric car on a showroom floor, and was made using photographs found on the internet. The collage was superimposed with text reading “A ‘greener’ industrialism (if such a thing is even possible) will not save the world. Green capitalism is an illusion.” The collage was made for printing as a poster and sharing online, and meant to convey the Deep Green perspective that so-called “green technology” is not effective at stopping the destruction of the planet. ...

Water Grab Opponents Declare Victory: Nevada State Engineer Rejects SNWA’s Water Applications

Major news from Nevada. The SNWA water grab has been completely rejected — at least for now. This project has been looming over eastern Nevada for decades. Now there is some space to relax, and to gather strength for the next fight. There are many other issues plaguing this region: pinyon juniper deforestation, mining, overgrazing, energy development, and so on. The land still needs defenders. Press Release by Great Basin Water Network ...

A Manifesto for a World in Crisis

THE SITUATION Our world is in crisis. Species extinction, topsoil loss, deforestation, rising seas, ocean acidification, global warming. It’s no exaggeration to say that the dominant culture is killing the planet. At the same time, societies around the world are staggeringly unjust. Neocolonialism builds up empires on the backs of indigenous peoples, sweatshop workers, unpaid and underpaid women, and the bodies of our nonhuman kin. FALSE SOLUTIONS We do not trust electoral politics, NGOs/non-profits, or foundations. Change must come from the grassroots, but the masses can be led astray. False solutions abound in the of vague reforms, half-measures, and technologies that only strengthen empire. ...

Wilderness and Unconditional Love

by Heidi Hall / Deep Green Resistance Great Basin I was not yet two years out of an abusive relationship and a series of events had broken my tenuously recovered self into a million small shards – each one bearing a sharp edge to cut me again. He told me to shut the fuck up when he hit me in the face and I had come to the realization that the people around me, consciously or not, were inclined to enforce his demand. ...
